Negligence, some formalin costs child’s life
SMGS authorities shift blame, inquiry ordered

Jammu | Mar 11
The allegedly casual and irresponsible administration in the Government SMGS Hospital has cost an innocent life but none seems ready to take the responsibility and fix the guilt.
A minor, Fareed Ahmed, son of Zulfikar Ahmed of Surankote in Poonch district was brought in to the SMGS Hospital on Monday for a surgery following a head injury. However, the minor died during the operation allegedly due to the negligence of doctors. Family of the deceased and sources in the hospital say that it was a case of the negligence of doctors but the operating team points out towards casual approach of the administration.
When Fareed was under operation in the theater, somebody sprinkled formalin in the nearby room. Formalin is a pungent smelling chemical which also causes breathlessness. It is an aqueous solution of formaldehyde and is generally used as a disinfectant, as it kills most bacteria and fungi.
Smelling formalin, the doctors who were performing operation, threw open the doors and windows of the operation theater. This, instead of reducing the congestion, gave way to more smell and ultimately the doctors had to rush out of the operation theater. The disturbance during the operations and doctors’ rushing out the operation theater leaving the patient unattended finally culminated into his death, allege the parents of the child.
Though it is not conclusive that the disturbance alone resulted into the death but parents and relatives of the deceased child have asked for an inquiry into the case. On the contrary, the doctors say that it was the severity of the head injury which caused the death.
When contacted, the Head of the Surgery department, Dr Saraf admitted to EARLY TIMES the formalin case but refused to confirm as who did this. “We are looking into the case as who scattered formalin there”, he said. Many doctors, when contacted, shifted the blame on hospital administration.
Meanwhile an inquiry has been ordered into the case.
