Advocating for a new and unique concept of ‘Farm Health Card’, a composite card for farmers giving full information related to their soil, crops, fertilizers, natural resource management, animal husbandry and pest management, Vice Chancellor Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology, Jammu, Prof Nagendra Sharma has asked the Scientists to come up with the area specific recommendations for adoption by the farmers. Addressing the meeting of the 9th Research Council of SUKAST held to review the progress on the going research projects and to evaluate the technical soundness of the newly proposed projects; VC said that since the state has rich natural resources of aromatic and medicinal flora with high economic value, the diversification in the farming has become imperative. ‘Time has come when we have to change our traditional practice of cropping system with the inclusion of diversified cropping system’, he said and stressed upon the scientists and field functionaries of allied departments to have regular interactions in devising strategies for transfer of new technologies from University to the farm fields with active involvement of farmers to enhance productivity. The meeting unanimously approved and passed the concept of ‘Farm Health Card’, which in the first phase, will be introduced in the villages adopted by the University and later by the line development departments. Dr G N Nanda stressed the need to focus on integrated cropping to increase the food production, while Dr N D Khanna impressed upon the scientists to work for the welfare of the animal husbandry sector to minimize imports. At present 58 externally funded research projects including ICAR coordinated schemes are under execution in the University, besides 100 university funded projects.
