| Mela witnesses heavy rush of visitors | | DGP inaugurates police welfare mela, announces renaming it as police public mela | | EARLY TIMES REPORTER SRINAGAR | AUGUST 27
Thousands of people from all over the valley participated in the day-long Police Welfare Mela organized by the Jammu and Kashmir Police Wives Welfare Association at Sher-i-Kashmir Cricket Stadium here today. The Director General of Police Gopal Sharma inaugurated the mela. Senior police officers and members of welfare Association and large number of civilians were present on the occasion. Director General of Police Gopal Sharma, Chairperson, Police Wives Welfare Association, Mrs. Vimla Sharma and top ranking police officers and other functionaries of welfare association went around a large number of stalls put up in the mela and evinced keen interest in the products kept in the stalls by various police welfare establishments from all the three regions of the state, private concerns and some voluntary organizations. They also interacted with the stall holders, police personnel and their families and enquired about their well being. While interacting with media persons Sharma said in view of massive public response to the annual events of police welfare melas each at Srinagar and Jammu announced that these melas be known as Police Public Melas in future. The mela has evoked tremendous response and involvement of locals who have been thronging all the day all these years to make purchases and participate in other activities like Raffle Draw, cultural items and other activities. The Raffle Draw would be held at 4 p.m at the same venue on 28th August 2006 Monday and the tickets would be available for sale at the venue from 10 a.m to 3.30 p.m as per a police communiqué. Among others ADGPs P. S. Gill, Madan Lal, IGPs J. A. Maqdoomi, Sheikh Owais Ahmad, Dilbagh Singh, Ashok Gupta, DIGs Zahoor Hussain Chisti, Farooq Ahmed and SSPs. |
