| Life-time prepaid users’ future hang | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | Mar 14 Over 5 lakh mobile phone subscribers using life long pre paid SIM card faces uncertain future in Jammu and Kashmir following fresh dictate of Department of Telecommunication (DOT) not to issue SIM cards with life long validity to prevent misuse of SIM cards at the hands of militants and their facilitators. The number of mobile phone subscribers with life time pre paid SIM card in Jammu and Kashmir is over 5 lakh.Despite issuing circular to all the telecom operators in j&k and north eastern states the DOT has not made it clear what will be the future of those mobile users who are not at fault. Official sources in BSNL explained that the circular was mandated as large number of service providers in the telecom industry was taking DOT for a ride. No telecom operator in Jammu and Kashmir can issue life time pre paid SIM cards as per the guidelines yet the telecom companies have been flouting norms blatantly and taking advantage of the ignorance of the mobile phone subscribers. A senior police official when contacted made it clear that though such SIM cards with life time validity pose a security threat as militants have been faking identity to procure thee SIM cards and using it to their advantage but telecom operators are too be blamed equally. It is the telecom operator which is flouting the norm as no one is given permission by the Dot to issue life time pre paid SIM cards. Chief general manager of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) T R Wadwa told media men here in Jammu DOT has recently issued a notice preventing misuse of sim cards with life time validity. He said we have directed all other private telecom operators in the state to follow the instruction in letter and spirit and resolve the crisis. He however remained non-committal over the issue and future of mobile subscribers with pre paid facility. |
