| Seth demands independent enquiry into food scam | | Rationees much higher than the population’ | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | Mar 14 Describing the food scam in Jammu and Kashmir as the biggest scam of the recent years, senior BJP leader Onkar Seth today demanded an independent enquiry to ascertain as how the state government is providing rations to 1,18 94, 000 rationees when its population as per 2001 census stood at 1, 00, 69, 000 only. Referring to the recent economic survey presented by the Minister Incharge Finance in the State Assembly, the BJP leader said that the government was providing ration to the rationees which was much higher than the population and wanted to know as who were these 18 lakh souls that were being supplied the much subsidized rations when no new ration cards have been issued or revised since 2001. This scam, he alleged, becomes all the more significant because in the figures given in the survey report also include 54.96 lakh rationees who are being provided highly subsidized and even free ration under the categories of Below Poverty Line and also the highly poor persons. The BJP leader questioned as to how the government is getting highly subsidized rations particularly under BPL and AA categories for over 40 per cent of the total population of the state, when in the survey report presented during last year had put the percentage of such persons just at 3.48 per cent on the basis of the report of the Planning Commission. Maintaining that prima facie the Minister Incharge and other higher ups in the state and the centre are guilty, the BJP leader said situation demands a high level probe against the alleged accused and impressed upon the Governor, the Accountability Commission, CBI and the State Vigilance Organization to look into the muddle. |
