Mattu's name for Mayor is reason for ire of NC against Malik
10/12/2018 10:26:05 PM

The Governor, Satyapal Malik, had to be but of criticism in the eyes of the National Conference and the Congress because as Governor he had favoured setting up the post of Mayor for Srinagar. That was not the reason since the Governor had opted for Junaid Mattu as the Mayor the NC and the Congress were up in arms. The reason being that Mattu revolted against the party leadership when as spokesman he was to toe the party line. And by defying the party line he contested the ongoing civic poll in Kashmir. That is the real reason for the National Conference to berate the Governor for suggesting a name for the Mayor of Srinagar. Since the Congress was not on friendly terms with the National Conference it had to make amends fowhat it decried the NC for boycotting the civic and Panchayat elections on the ground that the NC and the PDP were responsible for allowing the BJP to make inroads in the Kashmir valley through civic elections.
National Conference (NC) and Congress has questioned the announcement by Governor Satyapal Malik of favoring Junaid Azim Mattu for the post of Mayor of Srinagar.
In a statement issued here, NC said it was shocking and puts a big question mark on the impartiality of the Governor's office.
"It seems that Mayor for Srinagar City has already been selected even before the elections are over," NC statement said.
The joint statement released from the party headquarters Nawa-e-Subah, senior NC leader and MLA Eidgah Mubarak Gul, Women's Wing President Shameema Firdous, Central Secretary Irfan Shah, Provincial Vice President Muhammad Syed Akhoon and District President Srinagar Peer Afaq Ahmad said the ongoing election process was a smokescreen to hide the machinations of the Governor's office to throttle the democratic institutions in the State.
The statement read that the party was not against any person becoming the Mayor but the way Governor had unequivocally expressed his intentions by hinting toward a particular individual beforehand for Mayor's post of Srinagar was what casts a shadow on the whole election process already mired in controversies and the rules of engagement as per the established norms.
NC leaders maintained that the councilors elected from various wards exercise their democratic right and elect a mayor after following the whole process as enshrined in the rule books.
"There is already a big question mark on the fairness of ongoing ULB polls in the Valley. Adding to the confusion, Governor's remarks reveal that he has no reverence for the due process of elections," they said. By boycotting the elections the National Conference treats the civic and Panchayat elections a hoax and not in the lines of a particular line. This means that the NC has been critical of the poll process because it is not in the field nor has it fielded any candidate. For the NC Article 35-A is more dear than participation in the ongoing civic and Panchayat polls.
