| 1989 Jammu riot victims demand compensation of losses | | ‘Open letter to CM’ | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | Mar 15 The Joint Forum of the victims of 1989 riots in an open letter to the state Chief Minister has demanded grant of adequate compensation to the victims in general and the traders of Jammu in particular, besides constitution of an independent committee to assess the loss caused to the traders. The Forum has also demanded grant of financial aid to the victims in the shape of subsidy on loans apart from providing government job to one of the family members of the victims. The Forum in the letter sent through its working committee members’ including Jaswsinder Singh Bedi, Balwinder Singh Bhatia and others has alleged although the riot victims of 1984 in other states like Delhi and Punjab have been given adequate compensation by the centre as well as the state governments, the 1989 victims of Jammu have been neglected altogether. ‘Despite lapse of nearly two decades the hapless victims have not been provided any compensation’, the letter added. The letter reminded the Chief Minister about the 1989 episode and maintained that under a pre-planned conspiracy, the communal riots took place in the heart of Jammu city wherein hundreds of innocent citizens were killed and hundreds of shops were looted by the anti-social elements. ‘The riots were the direct outcome of the failure of the state machinery to provide security and to take timely safeguards in preventing the riots’, the letter added. It further said that while the committee constituted to assess the damages put the loss at Rs 5 lakhs to Rs.10 lakhs, the affected people were paid Rs.5000 each by the state government as financial aid. The Forum has expressed the hope that Chief Minister would personally look into the long pending demands of the riot victims and grant due compensation to the affected people. |
