| Rejection of Sarbjit’s mercy petition castes gloom on Assa Singh’s family | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | Mar 17 The decision of Islamabad to execute Sarbjit Singh, allegedly involved in bomb cases, has cast a gloom on the family members of Subedar Assa Singh, who is said to have been taken a war prisoner and has been languishing in Pakistani jail since 1971. “I and my children have lost every hope of seeing Assa Singh back in Jammu,”said 70 year old Nirmal Kaur, wife of the subedar. She said that she had decided to seek intervention by Prime Minister,Dr Manmohan Singh.so that “we were permitted to travel to Pakistan again for visiting various jails including the Army jail for finding my husband.”She said that refusal by the Pakistan President to accept mercy petition from Sarabjit Singh has closed “dashed to the ground our hope for locating Assa Singh.” Nirmal kaur said that no where in India militants, who were responsible for killing scores of people, including security personnel, were hanged to death. She said “even Afzal Guru whose death sentence has been served by the supreme court has not been hanged so far and against this President Musharraf was in a hurry to execute the death sentence awarded by the apex court in Pakistan. She feared fresh strains in the relations between India and Pakistan which would create problems for “our visit to Pakistan in search of Subedar Assa Singh.” |
