Court directs to provide facilities to jail inmates

srinagar, Oct 15: The State High Court on Monday ordered authorities to provide all facilities to the jail inmates in different jails.
Hearing a Public Interest Litigation, a division bench of the court passed the direction after being informed that Principal District and Session Judges of various districts have revealed glaring situation of jails and jails inmates.
In its report, PDJ Anantnag stated that there is no doctor in sub jail Anantnag even as no water purifier is installed for prisoners. As per report by PDJ Kargil, it is stated that there is no jail in the district and under trials are being shifted to district Leh which is 220 kilometers away from kargil.
As per the report of PDJ Poonch, it is submitted that the jail is under renovation and its inmates are brought to Rajouri, Kuthaua and Hiranagar as a result of which no schedule is given to under trials for facing the trial in the cases in which they are involved.
The Court directed the authorities to ensure all necessary renovation of the jail and provide all the facilities to the inmates.
With regard to district Bandipora was informed that there is also no jail and the prisoners are lodged either in Kupwara or Srinagar.
Condition of some jail inmates in central jail Srinagar has also been brought to the notice of the court and the division bench directed the SSP to ensure every possible treatment is given to the prisoners.
Meantime DLSA today produced the copy of the amended jail manual brought from Delhi legal Services Authority and the counsel has been asked to provided the copy of the same to state counsel for examination and suggestions.
