| Number of Pandits dwindling in valley: Samity | | | Early Times Reporter Srinagar | Mar 17 An organisation of Kashmiri Pandits today alleged that the community's presence in the valley was dwindling and held the mainstream political parties and bureaucracy of the state responsible for the scenario. "It is a sad fact that Pandits in the valley further dwindled during last eight years from 20,000 to present 4000. This speaks volumes about the negative role played by the mainstream political parties and bureaucracy of the state," Sanjay K Tickoo, president of Kashmiri Pandit Sangarash Samiti, told reporters here. Tickoo demanded setting up of a special task force to look into all aspects of survival of the Pandits in the valley. Accusing successive state governments of discriminating Pandits at all levels, he said, "we will no more tolerate the discrimination and neglect shown by the establishments". Tickoo said their survival could be ensured by providing employment, support to set up small businesses, education and proper housing. He also lamented over the pathetic condition of their temples and shrines in the valley, saying "they have been destroyed by vested interests". |
