Mal practices in school board examinations

The cancellation of a test paper of class 10, after the same was found to have been leaked out, reflects on the secrecy and irregularities going on in the board of school education. It is not for the first time that underhand practices indulged into by the officials in the board have come to fore. There have been many cases of some officials in the board being hand in glove with unscrupulous faculty members in schools, whom they help in getting appointed as Superintendents or examiners in the examination centers and the two in connivance helping some students to indulge in copying. Despite the flying squads appointed by the authorities and even police force deployed to check the menace of mass copying, the practice has not come to halt. Even in the evaluation of answer sheets, money exchanges hands. The authorities in the board allot centers to examinees of various schools to suit the convenience and underhand interest of the schools, where the examiners can oblige the examinees. These mal practices going on in the board of school education has rendered the entire examination system as a mere formality, without evaluating the real merit of a student. There are several cases, where the students having declared fail in some subjects get their answer papers re-evaluated after paying some fee and the board authority obliging these candidates by sending the papers for re-evaluation to the teachers who are in league with them and who help the students to get pass, with their marks increased in re-evaluation. Besides this J&K Board of School Education is mired in various controversies and scandals. Despite many unscrupulous elements in the board and among the teaching staff in the schools having been booked and punished for indulging in underhand means and corrupt practices, the matters have not improved and the corrupt practices resorted to by the unscrupulous elements are going on unabated. To restore the confidence of the students, their parents and the general public in the authenticity of examination system, it is imperative that the entire system should be overhauled. The secrecy in the examinations should be maintained, while there should be transparency in marking and evaluating the same. Some system should be evolved, where the examinees can come to know the mistakes committed by them in their answers and where they have failed to come to the expectation of the evaluator. In fact the entire standard of teachers and authorities in the education at every level has highly deteriorated. This has resulted in the teaching community losing the respect and dignity they enjoyed in the society in the past. The relations between the teachers and the taught have too come to a very low level, as a result of the teaching community do not maintaining that standard of integrity and fairness as they had once.
