| Valley gets Int’l trade center | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | Mar 17 The state government has kick started the process to set up an International Trade Centre to boost trade in the state. The beginning has been made from South Kashmir. Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad and Minister of State for Commerce Jairam Ramesh laid foundation for Rs 115.84-crore International Trade Centre (ITC) at Pampore. The ITC would have state-art exhibition halls and spread in an area of about 19 hectares. It would facilitate international exhibitions in the valley during summers, a season of extreme hot weather, which does not permit to organise exhibitions in other parts of the country. The project would be completed in two phases in two years. The first phase would be in the order of Rs 48.59 crore. The central government, as a special case, has agreed to fund the project to the extent of Rs 30 crore initially. The ITC would provide opportunities to all businessmen and about 3.5 lakh artisans of the state to promote their trade without intervention of intermediaries. Azad said that the ITC would not only help the trade in the state to grow, but also benefit country traders to exhibit their products in international exhibitions. He told the local traders to prepare themselves for export boom in the coming years. The chief minister said the ITC would also boost trade of local handicrafts, which he said sustained the economy during the long turmoil in the valley. Azad said that the annual export of handicrafts from the state was to the tune of Rs 1,500 crore which needs to be increased to Rs 5,000 crore. |
