| SRTC strike gets murky, dirty | | Govt engineers factionalism, regionalism to break ice | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | Mar 18 With no positive breakthrough in the SRTC strike, the government is apparently attempting at a divide and rule policy which too so far has not been able to break the ice. The Transport department here this evening organized a press conference for an association leader and announced that the Jammu based SRTC employees have called off the strike. At the outset, it seemed a clear division on regional lines but later the employees association clarified that there is no question of calling off the strike. At the press conference, the working President of Jammu unit of SRTC worker Pawan Kumar and Managing Director of the Corporation Manzoor Ahmad Lone announced that the strike has been called off. Pawan Kumar said that all the SRTC buses would operate on all routes in Jammu division from tomorrow routinely. He accepted that there was no justification to continue strike following acceptance of all genuine demands of the Corporation employees by the government. The Managing Director said that government has already accepted demands of the Corporation employees which included timely release of monthly salaries and COLA, convening of DPC, etc. He said strike and confrontationist approach was no right option to resolve problems. Reacting to this, the spokespersons of SRTC workers union issued a statement condemned the government action of trying to create division among the SRTC employees and said that instead of solving the employees problems through negotiation, Government is trying to arm twist the employees and create confusion among them. Deedar Singh and Paramjit Singh said that all the employees of J&K SRTC stand unitedly behind their leaders who have been put behind bars by the state government and no solution shall be acceptable till the leaders announce the same. They said that J&K SRTC employees have been striking against the government for release of Salary, COLA, GP/CP, regularization of adhoc/daily wage employees etc for last over a month. But the government instead of addressing to their genuine problems has been trying to sidetrack the issue. Meanwhile, Shakeel Ahmed Kuchey, chairman and Ashok Mehra president, All J&K SRTC Employees Union have said that the presence of J&K SRTC MD, Manzoor Ahmad Lone in the 'state managed' press conference speaks volumes about the frustration of the state government to deny the genuine rights of the employees class. They said that SRTC employees have been on the verge of starvation due to denial of wages and other genuine benefits to the employees. They said that anti-employees policies of the government would lead to its debacle in the coming elections and those advising it to resort to arm twisting methods are writing its script before dooms day. The SRTC leaders, who are behind bars in their message to employees asked them to remain united and asked them to intensify strike. Meanwhile SRTC spokespersons said that no SRTC bus would ply on roads till the government concedes their genuine demands and release their leaders and hold negotiations with them. |
