While the patients have been waiting for their turn to undergo surgical operations for the last aix months to two years, the doctors posted in Government Medical College Hospital were found over busy in performing operations in the private nursing homes, leaving the ill afforded patients high and dry.
It may seem incredible but is a fact that as many as 22 operations, which were fixed for today, were abruptly postponed without any sound reason. The patients, one of them the cancer patient, who have been waiting for the last six months to two years for their turn, were astonished to hear that their operations fixed for today have been abruptly postponed without assigning any reason. It is astonishing that all the four operation theatres in the Hospital were suddenly closed today although nearly 80 percent regular staff was present. Despite availability of the required staff, not a single operation was performed in the hospital today. Till Saturday last all the surgical theatres were running to its full capacity while only a handful of staff members, especially those working on consolidated pay, were on strike.
This dictatorial attitude of the hospital administration by creating artificial scarcity of staff smacks of a well planned conspiracy to force the poor patients to run for the private nursing homes. The eye witnesses said that doctors were seen performing operations in private nursing homes during duty hours and those on call duty did not lag behind. The authorities had not made any arrangement to post additional staff for emergency purposes even the HOD surgery had not made any make shift arrangement in the emergency operation theatre to meet any eventuality.
The old idiom ‘make hay while the sun shines’ goes well with the Hospital administration who have failed to rise to the occasion and streamline the working system in the hospital especially in the surgical units.
According to reports 10 cases of ward No 11 of SU IV were listed for operation today. They included 12 year Shubam for stricture urethra, Jagdish Raj for Kidney stone, 13 year Priya for PUV, Ghulam Nabi for Kidney stone, Razia for gall bladder stone, P N Dhar for stent removal, Chander Kant, Mansa Begum and Vijay OM for Urethral strictures and Chetan for post urethroplasty stricture.
Similarly, in Surgical Unit III, five operations fixed for today were cancelled without giving any fresh dates. They included Kusum and Darshani Devi for Laparoscopic cholecystectomy, Noor Ali for Varicocele, 6- year Mohammed Fariq for Herniotomy and 56 year Suram Singh , who is suffering of cancer in Pancreas.
The fate of the patients admitted in Surgical Unit V was not different. Those listed for operation today were Balwant Kour, Bachan Kour and Manju Gupta for Lap. Cholecystectomy, 7-year Chirag Kapoor and 8 year Atul Chowdhary for Urethroplasty, 13 year Pinky Devi for Appendicitis and 13-year Sandeep for Hernia.
However, when contacted Principal GMC Hospital, Dr. Rajinder Singh confirmed reports about closure of operation theatres and maintained that only emergent operations are being performed. He said the postponement of surgeries fixed in the hospital for today has been necessitated in view of the strike of the employees adding that about 800 para medial staff were on strike today.
Dr. Singh said though he was himself working round the clock but it was not possible to run the working of the hospital smoothly in absence of the required staff.
