| Sarai for patients' attendants was long felt | | | | The construction of sarai for the attendants of patients admitted in Government Medical College Hospital Jammu will meet a long pending need for the attendants accompanying the patients for treatment of various ailments getting admitted in the Jammu medical college hospital, coming from far flung areas. The Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad who laid the foundation stone of the sarai being constructed at an estimated cost of Rs 3 crore gave hope of the same getting completed before November 2008, with construction work already under way. In the absence of any affordable lodging place for the poor relatives of the patients coming from various parts of Jammu region for specialized treatment, they were facing great hardship and inconvenience. Besides the smooth functioning of the hospital in providing medi-care to the patients was suffering due to over rush of the attendants, who were often found squatting on the floors besides the beds of their patients, outside the wards and operation theaters. This over rush of attendants of the patients also created problem in maintaining cleanliness and sanitation of the hospital. Since the sarai is coming up near by the government medical college and hospital, it will facilitate the attendants of the patients coming from different places, to be available at hand to provide necessary assistance needed by their patients, without creating any commotion and crowding of the hospital wards and corridors during night. Although there are various philanthropist organizations and societies serving various sections of needy persons as well as facilitating the devotees visiting various shrines, this suspect of social service had remained ignored. What should have actually been the responsibility of the wealthy philanthropist and benevolent citizens to arrange for such a service, has been taken up by the government on itself and for the construction of sarai some members parliament and legislators have contributed part of their constituency development funds. In fact a system needs be evolved in the government medical college hospitals and other government hospitals, under which the relatives of the patients are speared of the need to throng the hospitals in large numbers to take care of their ailing relatives under treatment. For this the system requires a much larger number of nursing staff to look after the time to time needs of the patients. The routine courses for the patients like administering them medicines, injections, glucose, oxygen and even serving the prescribe food should basically be the responsibility of the nursing staff in the hospitals. But in view of acute shortage of nursing staff as compared to over rush of patients, all these assistance to the patients falls on the shoulders of their attendants, who are obliged to remain hanging close by their patients and thus creating problems in the smooth functioning of the hospitals. There is dire need for recruiting and then properly training and motivating the nursing staff to take proper care of the patients. The need for the relatives of the patients to look after the necessary requirement of their patients and comforts should be minimize. |
