| PDP-Congress put their acts together | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | Mar 19 Virtually indicating the continuation of alliance for the future, the Peoples Democratic Party and the Congress together today put a united face at a largely attended public meeting in North Kashmir where they talked elections and underlined the importance of alliance between the two parties. At Sopore, it was first rally of political workers addressed jointly by the leaders of Congress and PDP since January 2007 when both parties had openly started speaking against each other. In the separatist stronghold of Syed Ali Shah Geelani, it is the Constituency presently represented by the Congress where the Deputy Chief Minister Muzaffar Hussain Baig made a symbolic presence representing the Peoples Democratic Party. The Congress camp was led by the Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad who was accompanied by top party leaders including Mangat Ram Sharma and Abdul Ghani Vakil. In his speech, Baig underscored the importance of alliance between the Congress and the Peoples Democratic Party. He said that PDP and Congress joined hands after 2002 elections to bring about speedy development in Jammu and Kashmir and not to loot the public exchequer as was done by previous government. Baig pointed out that the coalition government is working under Common Minimum Programme envisaging overall development and restoration of complete normalcy and peace in the state. He said the historic and landmark decisions taken by the coalition government during the last more than five years have helper improve the socio-economic profile of the people of Jammu and Kashmir. He said the present government initiated revolutionary measures in education sector, opening 40 new degree colleges, upgrading dozens of schools and making higher education possible for the students close to the homes. Baig said since the present government took over, it started seeking resolution to Kashmir issue. In this connection, he referred to opening of Srinagar-Rawalpandi and other roads which not only strengthened people to people contact but also helped develop good relations between the two countries. He expressed hope that the wall of hatred between India and Pakistan would get dismantled soon and peace of bridge would be established. The Deputy Chief Minister maintained that it was because of the sincere efforts of Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad that the mindset of people of Jammu and Kashmir changed. People, he said, are now yearning for complete peace and normalcy and participating in the development programmes in a big way. Baig said on the instructions of Chief Minister, the Planning department has formulated a massive programme for construction and renovation of all streets and inner roads in the state. Speaking on the occasion, Health and Medical Education Minister Mangat Ram Sharma praised the people of Kashmir for maintaining communal harmony and brotherhood even during militancy. Saying that peace is essential pre-requisite for development and prosperity of a state, the Minister called upon the people to extend full cooperation to the government in restoring complete peace and normalcy. He said to provide better healthcare facilities to the people of state at par with All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), two super speciality hospitals one each at Srinagar and Jammu are coming up. He said all primary health centres in the state would have dental surgeons and dental technicians besides BUMS doctors would also be available in these hospitals. |
