| CBI inquiry into Dr Lone’s killing likely; Home Dept. seeks legal opinion | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | Mar 19 Jammu and Kashmir Government has started an exercise on sending a request to the CBI for holding a probe in the assassination of Dr Ghulam Nabi Lone, a former Minister of state for Education. This is being done following Chief Minister, Ghulam Nabi Azad’s, announcement on the floor of the Assembly in mid-January that the case related to the killing of Dr Ghulam Nabi Lone, Minister on October 18, 2005 will be referred to the CBI for a detailed probe, the state’s Home Department has started the process for seeking CBI assistance. Dr Lone had fallen to the bullets of unidentified gunmen in his official residence in the high security area of Tulsi Bagh in Srinagar. Commissioner Home, S .S. Kapoor, said here today “It is under process .The case has been referred to the legal department for its opinion’’ and after receipt of the opinion from the Legal Department, the case would be referred to the CBI. Kapoor made it clear that the Government has not dropped the idea of referring the case to the CBI. In fact the issue was raised by none other than Shoaib Lone MLA and son of Dr Ghulam Nabi Lone during the budget session of the Assembly. He had caused a flutter in the House when he said that he held the PDP led Government responsible for not having provided adequate security cover to his father. He had even gone to the extent of suspecting a political conspiracy behind his father’s assassination. He drew full support from the main opposition National Conference. Soon after Dr Lone fell to the bullets of militants the Government ordered an inquiry and the then Divisional Commissioner, B.B. Vyas, was asked to hold a probe .In his report Vyas had stated that there was security lapse but ruled out any political conspiracy behind Dr Lone’s assassination. The findings of Yyas had irked Shoaib Lone and a PDP dissident leader, Ghulam Hassan Mir who demanded a CBI probe. The leader of the opposition in the Assembly, Abdul Rahim Rather, had stated that it was not possible for a senior officer to submit a report against the state Government. Shoaib Lone and Ghulam Hassan Mir disagreed with the findings of the Vyas report saying that the assassination of Dr Lone was a “political conspiracy.” They said that militants had not killed him. They said that Dr Lone was killed because he was suspected by the PDP leadership of splitting the PDP. It was under pressure mounted by Shoaib Lone and the opposition members that the Chief Minister announced a CBI probe. The Home Department, according to official sources, does not want to take any hasty step. It is in favour of securing legal opinion before the Government sent its request to the CBI for probing the assassination. |
