| Yet another dislocation; 300 KP families being shifted from Udhampur | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | Mar 20
Facing yet another dislocation, second since migration from Valley, at least 300 Kashmiri Pandit families will be shifted from Udhampur to Jammu and resettled, though temporarily, at newly constructed two-room government quarters in Purkhoo and Nagrota. Official sources said that the migrant families putting up in makeshift accommodations in Battalwalian camps at Udhampur will be shifted to Jammu to adjust them in the government accommodations. Out of the 300 migrant families, to be shifted from Udhampur, two hundred fifty six families have been allotted the quarters in Purkhoo while fourty four others were given quarters at Nagrota. In a simple function, held here today, Relief Commissioner Vindo Koul announced the names of allotees. He told News Agency of Kashmir that the allotment was made on the basis of registration number of these migrant families though in the first phase allotment was made through draw of lots. Though the government decision to provide concrete accommodation to the migrants, living in exile from last about two decades, has provided some relief to the community but worry of yet another dislocation, which is obvious from their present place of putting up, was visible on their faces. "Though we are happy to have at least a roof on our head our lives are shattered once again due to the dislocation from the place, where we have spent more than fifteen years of life after migration", Narad Joo, an old inhabitant of the camp told News Agency of Kashmir. The migrants are living at Battalwalian camps in Udhampur and are being shifted to Jammu, which means they have to face dislocation from the place where they were living for the last several years after migrating from Valley. This will be their third migration ever since they were forced to flee from their homes and hearths in Kashmir Valley following eruption of militancy in 1989. They fled to Jammu and remained here for a few years till the Government temporarily settled these families in the camps at Battalwalian in Udhampur. However, after development of Battalwalian as industrial area, it was not possible to construct Government quarters there for these families and hence they are being re-settled again for third time in last 18 years. "It seems that dislocation has become our destiny", said 42 years old Arvind Bhatt adding, "We have not only lost our homes but even our identity and right to live peacefully". According to the Relief Commissioner, these migrants are being shifted to Jammu because of air pollution in the Udhampur camp area, which was adjoining industrial area there. He also informed that in the third phase, quarters would be allotted to those migrant families, which are already putting up in the Government accommodations, like Moulana Azad stadium. Acknowledging their gladness over getting two-room Government quarters, majority of these migrants, however, have regret that destiny was displacing them again to a new place for their settlement, which is again temporary and not permanent. "We want to go back to our homes and the government accommodation is no permanent solution to our miseries", another camp inhabitant said adding, "However, at least we have now a place to be called home".
