The Jammu and Kashmir government is to construct a new hydropower project on river Chenab in the energy starved state, which has a potential of generating 20,000 MW of electricity. The 690-MW Rattle power project on river Chenab in Kishtwar district, about 230 km north-east of Jammu, will be built at a cost of Rs.30.85 billion, according to an official statement.

The state imports 1,400 MW of electricity to meet its demand of 1,800 MW. Rest of the demand is met by the power generated by Chenani, Lower Jhelum and Upper Sindh power projects and royalty of 12 percent of the total generation of the centrally run projects, Uri and Salal. Chief Secretary B.R. Kundal said the new project would help the state in overcoming the power shortage.

He disclosed this at a meeting in which the project was given a green light Wednesday evening. "The government has decided to start work on Rattle project, at the basin of river Chenab, having the capacity of 690 MW. The construction work of the project has been handed over to Independent Power Producers (a private firm)," Kundal said in the meeting.

"With the completion of this project, problem of power shortage would be solved to a great extent. "This will not only generate power but also provide employment to the youths of the state in general and of Kishtwar in particular," Kundal said.
