| Women catalysts of social change: Mangat | | Asks for their empowerment | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | Mar 20 Underscoring the need for empowerment of women, the Minister for Health and Medical Education Mr. Mangat Ram Sharma has said that Indian women have not only played a commendable role in freedom struggle of the nation but also for making the nation a developed state at global level. "In real sense women actually mobilize and ensure social change by acting as active catalysts", he added. Addressing women folk of slum and Gujjar Bakarwal of Nagrota area at Women Sports and Song Mela function today, organized by Viraj Kala Kendra Jammu in connection with International Women Day celebrations, the Health Minister said that need of the hour was to empower women at political, economic and social fronts for making them self reliant in every field. Mr. Sharma said government has initiated various steps under which the women are empowered for living a dignified life in the society. He said concerted attention was being focused on girl child education adding that more and more girl children across the state are evolving in educational institutions. He said only those societies could progress whose women are well educated. "Woman as a mother is the best school of child, if mother is well educated understood that family touches the new horizons of development", the Minister said. Health Minister appreciated the role of Viraj Kala Kendra for making earnestly for all round development for empowerment of women besides education for slum children. On the occasion the Minister inaugurated craft exhibition where various crafts prepared by rural women were exhibited. He distributed awards among women who have set up craft stalls and participated in cultural programme. MLA, Billawar Dr. Manohar lal and former MLA Shanta Bharti also addressed on the occasion and highlighted the initiatives taken by the government and NGOs for upliftment of women. In his welcome address General Secretary of the organization, Raj Bhartia threw light on the day and apprised about the financial, health and other facilities provided by the organization to the women. Recreation sports like sppon race, three legs, optical race and cultural programme depicting folk song and Gidda were also organized on the occasion.
