Describing unemployment as the biggest challenge for Jammu and Kashmir, Peoples Democratic Party today said the turmoil has not only made the youths to suffer psychological and socially but also deprived them of the fruits of globalization and economic liberalization.
"Time has come when the youths of Jammu and Kashmir must become the beneficiaries of the region's fast expanding economy by taking up new jobs and fresh challenges," PDP president Mehbooba Mufti said addressing a public meeting at Nowpora in Budgam district.
She said the state's youths could be brought out of the mentality of siege by allowing them to freely connect to the outside world through knowledge and information technology.
Mehbooba said her party had taken a major initiative towards modernizing the technical education in the state by inviting Reliance Industries to open its prestigious Dhirubhai Ambani Institute of Information and Communication Technology (DAICT) here.
However, unfortunately, due to unknown reasons, the project was not pursued by the government yet, she alleged.
Referring to the proposed special drive being launched by the government for filling up class IV vacancies in the state, Mehbooba said merit and suitability should be the criterion for selection. "I assure you that PDP would never allow merit to be sacrificed for political gains," she said.
She said the future of the state's youth was linked to its political stability and economic prosperity.
Mehbooba said "with three new universities opened in as many years and five additional campuses added to the existing ones, the state is going to catch up with the emerging economic and educational scenario around us".
