Heavy rains disrupts PM's schedule in Orissa
8/28/2006 8:53:14 PM

Bhubaneswar, Aug 28 Heavy rains today disrupted the itinerary of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who arrived here today on a two-day tour of Orissa, putting in doubt his visit to the Super Thermal Power Station at Kaniha in Angul.
The rains greeted the Prime Minister and his entourage as his special aircraft touched down at the Biju Patnaik airport at 10.45 am.

But he could not take off for Kaniha in an IAF chopper immediately as scheduled because of the inclement weather and had to wait in the airport lounge for nearly an hour.

He then drove to the Raj Bhavan where he was taking rest even as the weather condition was being monitored.

As the heavy precipitation continued, a senior official said the programme to Kaniha might be cancelled if the rains did not relent within the next one hour.

The helicopters could not take off due to poor visibility, the official said.
