| New energy development policy likely in J&K | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | Mar 25 Jammu and Kashmir Government is working on a new policy to augment power generation in the state, which is facing severe power crisis. "For this, effective strategy of developed countries in power sector would be adopted to raise production and tackle energy shortage in the state," Power Minister Babu Singh said here today. To devise new sources of energy, he said that the department is studying models of several countries, including US, Russia and Australia. "We can’t depend only on hydro electric potential, but should also explore the possibility of developing energy from nuclear, hydrogen, geo-thermal, solar and bio-mass sectors," he said, adding, electricity serves as oxygen for various developmental activities and opens new vistas of economic growth and prosperity. The government is also seriously thinking to privatize power distribution in the state, Singh said. Short term strategy for four months from November- February and long term strategy for rest of the months in the year would be evolved to meet the supply and distribution differences in the state in which the government is intending to sell the surplus power through Power Trading Corporation of India limited, he said. Besides, thrust would also been given to hydro-electric energy, he said, adding apart from some mega hydro-electric project under execution, 28 mini and micro electric projects are also being set up in different parts of the state. He said first stage of Baglihar hydel electric project is in its final stage and is expected to start functioning soon. |
