| RTI Act likely to come in force through Ordinance soon | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | Mar 25 The Jammu and Kashmir Government has finally decided to bring in force the Right to Information Act which was awaiting implementation for some time now, most probably through an Ordinance. The Act was awaiting implementation after the government decided to introduce certain amendments to add more teeth to the Act. For the purpose, the government had listed an amendment bill to be introduced in the last Budget session. However, the amendment bill 2007 could not be passed due to the unscheduled adjournment of the session forced by the issue of sacking of "tainted ministers" raised by the Opposition, National Conference. It is pertinent to mention here that the original bill was passed by the Legislative Assembly way back in August 31 during autumn session held at summer capital Srinagar. The Act was thereafter sent to Raj Bhawan for Governor's consent, who sent the bill back with recommendations to make the bill more stringent, which included setting up of a dead line for early disposal of complaints by State Information Commission. However, after initial reluctance by the Government, it decided to endorse certain amendments and framed a fresh bill to be passed by the Assembly. Since it failed to pass the Bill in the budget session, the government has now decided to go ahead with the implementation of the Act with the fresh amendments through an Ordinance. The amendment carried in the Act is to sharpen its teeth further for convenience of the masses of state. |
