| India expresses concern over reports blaming BSF for firing | | |
Dhaka, Aug 28 India today termed as "factually incorrect" and "false" media reports in Bangladesh blaming the Border Security Force (BSF) for firing incidents on the Indo-Bangla border. The Indian High Commission in Dhaka said that it was "concerned about the continuing reports in the Bangladeshi media, which are incorrectly blaming the BSF for acting in a provocative manner and for firing on innocent Bangladeshis".
"The High Commission of India wishes to emphasise that the Bangladeshi reports are false and factually inaccurate," the statement said.
"The BSF does not target or attack innocent civilians at any time and is required to follow strict rules of engagement. However, attempts to cut the fence or breach it are illegal activities and contrary to the maintenance of established border management principles." The statement asked the Bangladeshi media to verify the facts with the High Commission in order to present a "correct and balanced picture of such incidents." Reports in the Bangladesh media yesterday said that two Bangladeshi youths were shot dead by BSF in northern Thakurgaon district while they were irrigating their fields.
The statement came a day after Home Secretaries of both the countries concluded their talks and agreed to exercise "utmost restraint" along the border.
The High Commission said that relevant Indian authorities have investigated and found that the incident occurred at Kishanganj sector in the north Bengal Frontier of West Bengal. |
