| Never, we will never be part of NDA again: Dr Farooq | | `Omar was always eager to get out during Gujarat riots' | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | Mar 29 In a run-up of book controversy, Former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir and patron National Conference has said that his party will never be part of National Democratic Alliance (NDA) again. "I don't have any relationship. I don't want to have any relationship with such people", Dr Farooq said while referring to the Bhartiya Janta Party and its leadership. Former chief minister of the state is facing severe criticism after BJP president LK Advani, in his biography My Country, My Life, accused him for trading power for autonomy. In an interview published in a news magazine, Tehlka, Dr Abdullah said that Advani is absolutely incorrect as attempts were being made to malign him and his party. "They want to malign us. First it was Narasimha Rao and now it is Advani Ji, but we have not changed our stance", he said adding, "We would not have passed the autonomy report in the Assembly if we were open to change. Our demand for autonomy will stay till it is granted". "I don't think he is being correct about it. If we wanted power, we could have easily held onto power even after the 2002 elections. We merely had to buy 13 more candidates to form a government. I don't believe in that kind of politics. We were thinking of leaving the NDA but it was they (Advani and Atal Behari Vajpayee) who came to Srinagar when my mother died and said, please don't take any such decision because we are going to talk on the autonomy issue and we are going to ask KC Pant to start negotiations on the issue of autonomy". Questioning the seriousness of the central government in mitigating the sufferings of people, he said, "Why is India, even today, not talking about autonomy for Tibet? They are silent on it because if they do that, China will say, if you are talking about autonomy for Tibet then what about autonomy for Jammu and Kashmir?" On the claims of Advani that the then prime minister of India, AB Vajpayee told him to either forget about autonomy or leave the NDA, Dr Abdullah said, "Nothing of the sort. It is a total and baseless lie. At no stage did Vajpayee ever say any of this." On the future relationship with NDA or BJP, he said, "No, I don't have any relationship. I don't want to have any relationship with such people and we will never be a part of the NDA again". Terming his past association with NDA as a mistake, Dr Abdullah said, "I think it was an absolute mistake and we should never have been a part of the NDA". "We should have walked out. Omar (Abdullah) was always eager to get out during Gujarat, but I thought we could stay on and tell them that what was happening was wrong. I should have agreed with Omar and we should have quit". |
