| ‘Defeat Kashmir centric organizations’, Khajuria asks people | | BJP announces Chander Prakash as its nominee from Vijaypur | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | Mar 29 Much ahead of the assembly elections, the state unit of the BJP has launched the election campaign in Jammu region and decided to field Chander Prakash as party candidate from Vijaypur Constituency. Senior leaders of the party today held a rally at village Nandpur to garner people’s support for its candidate. The party campaign was launched by the BJP President, Ashok Khajuria who confirmed that Chander Prakash would be the party candidate from Vijaypur during the ensuing Assembly poll. Since the BJP leadership claims that the anti incumbency factor would weight heavy on the Congress and the PDP, the BJP had a better chance for victory. Chander Prakash had been fielded by the BJP in 2002 poll but he could secure 20.57 per cent of total polled votes against 39.20 per cent by Manjit Singh BSP candidate who after winning the poll had joined the PDP. He would be the PDP candidate during the next election. The National Conference candidate, Surjit Singh Slathia, had secured 31.37 per cent of total polled votes. Addressing the public meeting Khajuria said that it was intriguing that while on hand refugees from West Pakistan, settled in Jammu, were neither given permanent citizenship rights nor any compensation for the assets they had lost while migrating to Jammu, on the other, the ruling coalition had decided to provide jobs and Rs three lakh as monetary assistance to militants who lay down their weapons. He said the successive State Governments would dish out promises to West Pakistan refugees on grant of citizenship rights and compensation for their losses only during the election period and after the elections were over these promises remained unfulfilled. Khajuria alleged that corruption under the Congress-PDP rule had touched new heights in Jammu and Kashmir. The problem of unemployment was not tackled properly and the border areas were neglected in terms of development schemes. He urged people to vote against those parties that were in power from time to time so that a strong BJP could come to the rescue of unemployed youths and ensure proper development of border areas. Holding successive governments responsible for perpetuating regional discrimination, the BJP leadership appealed people to defeat the Valley centric organizations in the ensuing election. |
