| Army closely watching recent developments in Pak | | ‘Fears escalation in violence level in coming months’ | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | Mar 30 Despite decline in the level of militancy violence witnessed in the recent months in Jammu and Kashmir, the security forces guarding frontiers of the nation are in no mood to lower their guard as they fear further escalation in the level of violence in the coming months. According to senior army official’s year 2008 has till now witnessed near zero level of infiltration in the region falling under 16 Corps headquarters. "When President Pervez Musharraf was at the helm of affairs in Pakistan, we witnessed constant decline in the level of violence along the Line of Control and on the International borders. But now with new government taking charge we can not be so sure about the turn of events’’, the officials added. The internal situation in Pakistan is improving with each day but when it comes to Kashmir things deteriorate in one go, Army officials said sharing their personal opinions over the current situation in Pakistan and vis a vis its impact on Kashmir "We cannot sit back and relax as we cannot visualize what lies in store for us, army officials said discussing possible security scenarios ahead of assembly polls. Statistical data collected over the last 18 years of militancy in the state establishes the fact that incidents of violence gain momentum in summer months as snow starts melting and fresh batches of militants after undergoing training in terrorists training camps running across the LoC infiltrate in Indian Territory and spread violence. “We are closely monitoring recent developments in the neighboring country especially restoration of democracy in Pakistan and comparing trends of infiltration, a senior army official of the Nagrota based 16 Corps told newsmen during a recent informal interaction. If Islamic fundamentalists reign supreme in Pakistan under the new dispensation we might witness further escalation in the level of cross border terrorism but if new Pak Prime Minister is able to win tacit support of President Pervez Musahrraf normalcy will prevail along the frontiers, senior army officials said commenting on the possible security scenario in the state. Several senior army officials candidly admitted having Pervez Mushraff at the helm was a welcome sign for India as he had developed unique level of understanding with them and was keen to resole the Kashmir issue by furthering dialogue process. |
