| PCC spokesperson ridicules opposition charges | | Opposition gearing up to launch parallel campaign against Azad | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | Mar 30 Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad may been toiling hard to project his image of a development man ahead of 2008 Assembly polls to woo electorate but on the other hand opposition parties are gearing up to build a parallel campaign to puncture tall claims of the Chief Minister as they believe that lakhs of people across the state are deprived of sufficient water/power supply and civic amenities and are living in inhuman and pathetic conditions. Reacting to these publicity stunts aimed at self projection in the public domain with the help of public money State BJP Chief, Ashok Khajuria, said today "Chief Minister may hard sell his theme of development but it is evident this coalition government has failed on all fronts and is not coming to the aid of the needy and the poor. He said the Chief Minister’s slogan of development has already been grounded because of the Government's failure to ensure phenomenal development in the industrial sector. "He said instead of attracting big industrial houses for setting up their units in Jammu and Kashmir, industrial sickness has touched a new high during the last five years. A recent survey, he said, had indicated that several thousand units in the state had been closed and several hundred other units, which had secured incentives from the Government, were found untraceable. He said that Azad's intentions may have been genuine but his failure to check corruption had not allowed him to translate his ideas and dreams into reality. He said that over the years the Congress has projected itself as a votary of grant of citizenship rights to refugees from West Pakistan settled in Jammu for the last 60 years. But its support was made known only during the elections with the result even under the Congress-PDP rule, the West Pakistani refugees have remained a highly discriminated lot. Leader of the Panthers Party in the state Assembly, Harsh Dev Singh, said "setting up Tulip garden or rebuilding of Badam Vaari (almond garden) were not the projects which could change the lives of people. They can allow people time for relaxation and Bollywood people to shoot movies", he said and asked "What people need is good road connectivity, better facilities for healthcare and education". He said the plan of developing two Medical colleges in Srinagar and Jammu has not been completed during the last four years adding "though the Government ordered up gradation of hundreds of schools and opening of several degree colleges, the paucity of staff and infrastructure had added to the woes and difficulties of the youth. "He said for the last five years the Government failed to fill up over 20,000 vacant posts in several departments, especially in the Department of education and for all these years the Government could do nothing to improve the pace of selection of candidates for gazetted and non-gazetted posts because of the tardy selection process adopted by the Public Service Commission and the Subordinate Service Selection Board. He stated that after five years the Government has decided to set up fast recruitment boards for speedy filling of the vacant posts. However, Congress spokesman, Ravinder Sharma, ridiculed the allegations leveled against the Chief Minister by the opposition parties and said that what the previous Governments could not achieve in 27years, the Congress-PDP coalition Government could achieve it in just five years. He wanted the opposition leaders to study relevant records which indicate that the ruling coalition had been instrumental not only in improving the security scenario in the state but also in carrying out series of development activities in the shape of roads, buildings, opening of new primary health centres, hospitals, up gradation of medical facilities. He said that it was for the first time in the last 60 years that power and drinking water availability in Jammu had been improved to a large extent. |
