| Withdrawal of excise exemption criticized | | Abdullah urges Delhi to reconsider decision | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | Mar 31 Patron National Conference, Dr Farooq Abdullah has urged upon the Government of India to reconsider its decision regarding the virtual withdrawal of Central Excise exemption by the Union Ministry of Finance. A deputation of Federation of Industries headed by its Chairman, Anil Suri, called on Dr Abdullah here today and informed him that the said notification of the Union Government will lead to the closure of industries in Jammu and Kashmir, retrenchment of over one lakh workers, flight of capital from the Jammu and Kashmir, blocking of new investments, loss of investor's confidence in the state thereby leading to deterioration of socio-economic condition of the state. The industry office bearers impressed upon Dr Abdullah that the Union Government order will lead to loss of employment and business opportunities in the state. Expressing his anguish at the Union Government's notification, he expressed his full sympathy and support for the industries in Jammu and Kashmir. He said the industrial package for the state was brought into the state with a great effort of the then government with the active support of Omar Abdullah, who was the then Union Minister for Trade and Commerce and said that the benefits of that industrial package were initially frittered away by passing on the same to the state of Uttranchal and states in North East. This, he said, was the first blow to the industrial development of the state of Jammu and Kashmir. Dr Abdullah apprehended that those who have invested in the state will move out their investments from the state and look for greener pastures elsewhere in the country thus threatening the socio-economic conditions of the state. The NC patron said that Jammu and Kashmir, which is reeling under a spell of unemployment and lack of development, will face a serious setback if the notification is not withdrawn immediately. He said on the one side government is promising more avenues for employment and employment generation and on the other hand such notifications contradict the spirit which is much hyped and proclaimed by the present government. He assured the deputation of industrialists that he will take up this matter with the Union Finance Minister and the Chief Minister of the state and will urge them to immediately intervene in the matter and take corrective steps to allow the industry to flourish and also create an environment where fresh investment comes in the industrial sector in Jammu and Kashmir. Dr. Abdullah said he did not want to politicize the matter as it pertains to all those who belong to the state. "All those who are interested in the welfare of the people and are genuinely concerned about the unemployment should rise above party lines and unitedly take it up with the Union Government and ensure that this notification is immediately withdrawn", he added. Chairman of the Federation of Industries Anil Suri said that the meeting with Dr. Abdullah was very fruitful and they felt re-assured by his concern for the industries in Jammu and Kashmir. Suri was accompanied by Rajesh Jain, Co-chairman of Federation of Industries, Ramesh Badyal, Co-chairman of Federation, T S Reen Secretary General Federation of Industries, Presidents of Kathua and Samba Industries and many others. |
