| Hockey: Khalsa Club lifts trophy | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | Mar 31 One of the top clubs of the state, Khalsa Club today lifted the Ashwani Kapoor Memorial Hockey trophy beating equally good Singh Club Bandurakh 8-6 in the final through tie-breaker at K K Hakhu Stadium, here. Earlier, in the stipulated time, the match ended in a 3-3 draw thereby forcing the officials to decide the fate of the final through tie-breaker. In the process, Khalsa Club emerged the winner converting all the five penalty shoots into goal as against only three by Singh Club. Mandeep Singh opened the account for Khalsa Club converting a penalty corner into goal in the very third minute of the match. However, the lead was equalized by Singh Club through Sukhwinder in the 16th minute. Khalsa Club again went ahead with Gurpreet Singh sounding the board for second goal in the 24th minute but only to find Singh Club taking lead scoring two successive goals on penalty corners through Dalwinder Singh (32nd and 34th minute). The high spirited team of Khalsa Club continued attack on the opponent goal post and finally succeeded in making it a 3-3 draw with Rajinder Singh netting the ball in the 43rd minute. Later, in the tie-breakers, Parvinder Singh, Amandeep Singh, Rajinder Singh, Gurcharan Singh and Jagjit Singh successfully converted the penalty shoots. From Singh Club, Dalwinder Singh and Harvinder Singh missed the target while Manjit Singh, Jagjit Singh and Angat Singh were successful in their attempts. The final was officiated by Mukesh Kumar, Surinder Pal Singh, Amarjit Singh and Jasbir Singh. Veteran footballer and Senior Superintendent of Jammu and Kashmir Police (SSP), Sheikh Mehmood was chief guest in the final. He gave away winner and runners-up prizes. He also presented trophies to the winners and runners-up teams of State Heros Cup Hockey Tournament held in January. In State Hero Cup, Akali Kour Singh Club had defeated Khalsa Club by two goals to one. Prominent among others present were Jagjit Singh, general secretary Jammu and Kashmir Hockey Association, Gian Singh, Manmohan Singh and PD Singh. |
