| Selection of 13000 Anganwari workers, helpers within a month: Vakil | | Decisions taken to streamline SW Deptt effective from April 1 | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | Apr 1 Minister for Social Welfare Mr. Abdul Gani Vakil has said that selection process for engagement of over 13,000 Anganwari workers and helpers to make 6711 centers operational would be completed within a month adding advertisement in this connection will be issued shortly. Addressing a public meeting at Hiranagar Kathua today, the Minister asked officers to gear up for time-bound completion of the recruitment process. He said more 7000 Anganwari centers envisaging employment for 13000 unemployed women under phase-III would also be made functional by June-July this year to augment supplementary nutrition facilities for children in the state. Spelling out measures taken to streamline working of his department, Mr. Vakil said that nutrition purchase and distribution system has been decentralized at district level and village chowkidars and numbardars empowered to identify and verify beneficiaries. He said Block Medical Officer has been made final authority to assess disability of the handicapped for issuance of medical certificates. Earlier, Chief Medical Officer was issuing these certificates. “All these decisions will take effect from April 01, 2008”, he said and added that check distribution would henceforth be carried out in open camps to ensure total transparency”. Mr. Vakil said “Any official found involved in corruption of any sort or delaying sanction of pension cases will be sternly punished”. He also asked people to catch hold of the official who asks for money for engagement of Anganwari worker or helper and hand over him to police. The Minister reaffirmed commitment of the government to encourage performing and honest officers. He said while the competent officials will be rewarded, the incompetent and lethargic shunt out. He said transparent working of Social Welfare Department should set a trend in providing responsible administration to inspire all others in the state. Mr. Vakil also distributed cheques worth Rs. 1.90 lakh among 160 beneficiaries of Hiranagar tehsil. He said old age pension scheme is being re-modeled as Indira Gandhi Old Age Pension Scheme under which financial assistance has been enhanced to Rs. 325. Every weak, infirm and destitute poor man and woman above sixty years age will be covered under it, he added. Among others, MLA Hiranagar Mr. Girdhari lal Chalotra and Ex-MLA Th. Balbir Singh spoke on the occasion. |
