| Dilawar inspects modernization works on Ranjan | | Lift Irrigation Scheme, | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | Apr 1 Work on Rs. 8 Crore improvement and strengthening project of pumping machinery in the historic Ranjan Lift Irrigation Scheme, Jammu is in full swing and about 85% work have been completed so far. The main objective of the improvement project is to increase the utilization of command area from the present level of 1874 acres to 8075 acres for both Kharif and Rabi crops, which will benefit to a large number of farmers of Jandial, Agore, Ranjan, Ghrota, Amb and Seri Panditan villages. The Minister for PHE, Irrigation and Flood Control, Mr. Mohammad Dilawar Mir today conducted a detailed inspection of the ongoing improvement work in the Ranjan Lift Irrigation Project and directed the concerned engineers to complete it as early as possible. He also urged for beautification and landscaping of the project site. The Minister was accompanied by Principal Secretary Hydraulic, Mr. A K Angurana, Chief Engineer, Irrigation Jammu, Mr. V K Abrol and concerned Superintending Engineers. The Minister said National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) has sanctioned a loan assistance of about Rs. 6.31 Crore for improvement and strengthening of the pumping machinery of the Ranjan Lift Project adding that the project will be completed in three phases by the end of next fiscal year. He said Irrigation water will be available by lifting of water from river Chenab through six modern vertical turbine pumps of 20 cusecs discharge each with one stand by pump. The total length of the main canal is about 18.30 Kms with distributaries and direct outlets of 36 and 34 Kms length respectively. The Minister was informed that two modern Automatic Voltage Regulators of 2.5 MVA capacity have been installed in the Lift Irrigation System so far. In addition, a modern Mechanical Hoisting System has also been installed for clearance of silt from the sump and its disposal into the down stream of river Chenab. The Minister also inspected on-going de-silting and renovation works in the historic Ranbir Canal and instructed to concerned engineers the complete the works within three days so that the Canal is thrown open for Irrigation purposes as early as possible. The canal is presently under renovation and desilting since February last. The Minister was informed that due to climatic changes and effects of Global Warming, the water level in river Chenab, which feeds the Ranbir Canal, has drastically depleted to 10,000 cusecs of water as compared to 44,000 cusecs of water last year, showing a 4 times decrease. The Minister directed the Chief Engineer, Irrigation Jammu to formulate a comprehensive rain water harvesting projects for kandi and rain fed areas of Jammu so that farmers in these areas are provided with assured irrigation facilities. |
