Muskan three years old girl sustained Trauma to left Tempromandibular joint at the age of 3 months and subsequently she developed complete Ankylosis of the left Tempromandibular joint. Due to lack of timely medical treatment, she developed severe deformity of the lower jaw due to which she was not able to open her mouth and was not able to eat any solid food. She was completely on fluid diet for last two and half yrs. Major Ravinder Singh Semi, Maxillo-Facial Surgeon posted to 16 Corps Dental Unit, performed reconstructive surgery of Tempromandibular joint in which he did release the fused joint and reconstructed the joint with Rib Graft. Before operation she could only open her mouth by few millimeters. However after surgery the patient is able to open her mouth wide and eats every thing as a normal child does. Tempromandibular joint (TMJ) ankylosis is very distressing structural condition that denies the victim of a normal diet and opportunities in careers that require normal speech ability. It also causes severe facial disfigurement that aggravates psychological stress. Tempromandibular joint ankylosis during early child hood may lead to disturbances in growth, or cause asymmetry and serious difficulties in eating and breathing during sleep. |
