| Poverty, main reason for backwardness of women: Survey | | |
Kolkata, Aug 28: Poverty and illiteracy are the main reasons for the backwardness of women in West Bengal and atrocities against them, a study has found.
The survey carried out by the government in association with the Calcutta, Uttar Banga and Burdwan universities to find reasons for backwardness of women found poverty to be the main culprit, Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee said here today during a programme organised by the West Bengal Commission for Women.
"Crime against women has increased in the state. Rape incidents in the state have increased from 1,002 in 2004 to 1,434 in 2005 while sexual harassment cases have increased from 1,186 in 2004 to 1,591 in 2005.
"Out of total 8700 villages in the state 4612 villages have been identified as poor. Illiteracy is also a key factor for the backwardness of women. Literacy rate in the North Dinajpur, Malda and Purulia districts of the state, is extremely low at 36 per cent against 75 per cent in the state." He said.
