| Mattoo for broader cooperative security framework to address threats | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | Apr 2 Maintaining that narrow framework of security have accentuated insecurity in the region, Vice Chancellor Jammu University, Professor Amitabh Mattoo has stressed the need for broader cooperative security framework for the region which would address all dimensions of Military as well as non- military threats in the region. Making known his speech at Pugwash Conference on regional security in a Press conferece here on Wednesday, Mattoo said that the only way to resolve conflicts of the past is through dialogue. "We also need to acknowledge that narrow frameworks of security have not worked. They have only created "security dilemmas" for other states and accentuated insecurity in the region," he added. We may now have the opportunity to move beyond these zero-sum security concepts to creating a broader cooperative security framework for the region and Once this is in place, we should put in place a model of security that addresses all the dimensions, including all the non-military threats arising from poverty, environmental erosion , energy insecurity, pandemics, he added. He further said that the people of Pakistan have realized the importance of institutionalizing the right of political choice through elections, strengthening multiple cultural traditions, and respecting fundamental freedoms for all, he said He on the occasion said that we have witnessed the Talibanization of the region, and the border between Afghanistan and Pakistan is still at the epicenter of forces that are seeking to destabilize the region. "We hope the democratic forces, especially the Awami National Party, the Pakistan Peoples Party and Pakistan Muslim League (N) work together to stabilize the country and strengthen the peace process with India," he added. Referring to dialogue between the two countries resuming next month, he said that the composite dialogue between India and Pakistan will yield concrete results and help to resolve all our mutual problems. |
