| SKUAST-K organizes research council meet | | | Early Times Reporter Srinagar | Apr 2 Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology (SKUAST), Kashmir organized the 41st Research Council meeting today at its main campus, Shalimar. The meeting held under the Chairmanship of Prof. Anwar Alam, Vice-Chancellor, SKUAST-K was attended by Director Extension Education, Director Research, Director, Department of Agriculture, Director, Animal Husbandry, Director, Sheep Husbandry, Director, Command Area Development, Chief Wild Life Warden, Deans of faculties and heads of the divisions. In his introductory remarks, Vice –Chancellor SKUAST expressing satisfaction over the conduct of research programme by the University said that a lot requires to be done in light of dwindling world food production and average per capita food availability. He said it is also necessary to address food security problems in the region. He emphasized that research efforts need to be strengthened and programmes refined to develop technologies that enable the farmers in the region achieve higher production and productivity. He impressed upon the scientific community of the University to use their creative talents to achieve desired results and enable us to achieve our development goals. Director Research Dr. A.R Trag in his address said that research efforts of University are being pursued with the funding from the state and central government departments. He said technology development and up gradation programmes were also followed to improve crop performance in vegetable and horticulture crops. He said university Varietals Elevation Committee finalized to release 15 varieties of crops that include one rice variety, two in maize and potato, two in apple and eight vegetable high breeds. He said for skill up gradation, training programmes workshops, seminars, symposia both within and outside the state, has added to the quality of research activities. During last year 154 scientists participated in these programmes. Dr. Trag said that more than 1000 kanals of land is under cultivation of Shalimar wheat-1 in the farmers field in Anantnag Kulgam and Pulwama, Baramulla and Kupwara districts which he said is expected to be harvested by Ist week of June 2008 for timely transplanting of paddy crop in Valley. To address problems of live stock sector research is being actively perused at faculty of Veterinary Sciences and Animal Husbandry Shuhama, he added. |
