Facing the test of its strength, the Jammu and Kashmir unit of Congress party is making all out efforts to make the forthcoming women convention a historic success.
Congress president Sonia Gandhi will be addressing the women convention here on April 12 for which the Congress leaders are reaching out all nooks and corners to mobilize the women power for show of strength. Sonia had last year also presided over a women convention in Srinagar but that had remained a low key affair. The forthcoming convention is being held at the insistence of the Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad.
Interestingly, ahead of the proposed women conference, the Chief Minister has rehabilitated the State Mahila Wing chief of the party Swarn Lata Bhagat. To keep the women wing in good homour ahead of the convention, Swarn Lata has been appointed as Vice Chairperson of the Social Welfare Advisory Board. The Social Welfare Minister is the Chairperson of the Board by convention. Bhagat will enjoy the state and rank of a Minister of State.
It may be recalled here that before his swearing in a Minister of State, the position of the Vice Chairperson Social Welfare Advisory Board was held by Congress MLA from Inderwal Ghulam Mohammad Saroori. Swarn Lata is a former Legislator and she had unsuccessfully contested the 2002 assembly elections from Samba constituency when she lost to Yash Paul Kundal of the Panthers Party.
Meanwhile, to discuss the party matters with top central leaders, the Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad this afternoon dashed to New Delhi. |
