| It’s all shallow: Omar | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | Apr 4 Even as the coalition partners are yet to embark to reap the harvests of land rent hike announce by the Ministry of Defence, the National Conference president Omar Abdullah described this move as shallow measure. Addressing a press conference here this afternoon, Omar said “the hike, trumpted by the Centre as massive, is only cosmetic. How can a farmer, whose land has been occupied by security forces, survive on a meagre amount of a few thousand rupees doled out by the Government every year”. He said fertile land could make a farmer earn more than that and help him provide for his family besides saving for a rainy day. "Wonder what would he do with Rs 3,000-4,000 per annum as announced by the Defence Ministry," he said, adding his party would elicit the views of those whose lands and properties were under occupation of security forces before starting a state-wide agitation on the issue. Omar, who has been holding a series of meetings in the state's winter capital, said the move had also exposed the lie of the ruling Congress-PDP that troop reduction had been effected. "If there was any troop reduction, the government would not have been eager to give a raise in the rents," he said maintaining that the hike was not sufficent. On whether he was pressing for demilitarisation, Omar made it clear that his party was only in favour of troop reduction as the state was surrounded by two countries Pakistan and China. |
