News Analysis
The mild rain that lashed Jammu, along with Punjab, Haryana and some other parts of northern India, after wind storm, lightening and clouds in the sky for last 5 days, has created a sort of panic among the farmers. The Metrological Department has predicted the rain fall activities likely to continue for a few more days, with the possibility of hail and thunder squall accompanying rains in certain areas. This is causing anxiety at a time when the wheat crop is almost ripe and the time for harvesting the Rabi crop is close by. This inclement weather, with the mercury dipping considerably, when heat is required for the Rabi crops, is not a good omen.
According to the IMD the influence of a western disturbance and its induced low level cyclonic circulation and moisture incursion from the Arabian Sea, northwest India is already experiencing isolated thunder storm activity for the past few days. Interpretation of various numerical weather prediction models and synoptic analysis indicate the likelihood of another western disturbance to affect northwest India in the coming two days. Rain and thunder shower activity is being witnessed over the entire region of Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Utterkhand, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh and western Utter Pradesh.
Due to these conditions maximum temperature shall remain low in the region for few more days. Any rains at this time of the season can cause harm to the Rabi crop, leading to fall in the production of wheat, the scarcity of which is already being felt world over.
Although agriculture scientists rule out any major threat to the wheat crop, unless the intensity of rain, thunder and windstorm gets abnormal and the same are accompanied by the hailstorm, the farmers are a worried lot. The farmers in Punjab, Haryana and others wheat growing areas who were expecting a bumper crop this year are worried that any continuance of rain and wind will dash their hopes to the ground. Agriculture experts contend that this time is crucial for farmers on the northwest region when the grain is stepping towards energy and any further rain or High velocity winds will severely affect the crop yield.
In the meanwhile the demand for wheat crop has considerably risen the world over in the wake of change the consumption habit of the people. In India in particular the regions where the staple food was rise more and more people are switching over to consuming wheat, in view of the price of coarse rice registering an upward trend, being unaffordable for the common man.
