Jammu, April 4: Though making all out efforts to salvage its position and consolidate strength for the forthcoming elections, the National Conference seems to in damage control mode instead of trying some innovative ideas. At the end of its two day workers’ convention here at the party headquarters, the National Conference passed resolution which, among other things, sought to address two crucial issues which the party ought to have worked out when it was in power with absolute majority between 1996 and 2002. The NC convention passed a resolution for restoration of greater autonomy for Jammu and Kashmir. “National Conference is always open for discussion on the issue if any solution better than autonomy and acceptable to the people of the state is put forth. Nothing but autonomy will restore peace in the state of Jammu & Kashmir as well as in the sub-continent as the demand for autonomy falls within the framework of Constitution of India”, said the NC resolution. Interestingly, this resolution is passed close to the heels of the former Deputy Prime Minister LK Advani’s revelation that Abdullah’s comprised with autonomy issue to remain in power. To rebuff Advani’s assertions, the party condemned the disclosures made in his autobiography. The NC resolution further said, “this session condemns the observations made in the recently released books titled My Country My Life". National Conference has always represented the aspiration of the people of the state & its goal was never to achieve the power, said a handout. Interestingly, the National Conference talked high of the regional discrimination against Jammu region and reiterated that implementation of regional autonomy can address this problem. It can be recalled here that the allegations of regional discrimination were rampant during the NC regime but the party during its six year’s rule could not do anything to address this sentiment. The NC session also demanded that the elections to the basic and democratic institutions like "Panchayats" be held immediately. Because of non holding of elections to the panchayats, the developmental works have come to a stand still, as such, in order to ensure people's participation in the development works, the elections to the panchayats must be held forthwith to strengthen the three tier "Panchayati Raj" in the state while taking the process of governance to the villages, said the resolution. |
