Violent protests in Kashmir Valley
4/5/2008 11:48:12 PM
Early Times Reporter
Srinagar | Apr 5
The deserted streets of Jammu and Kashmir witnessed violence on Saturday, as protestors clashed with security personnel following a shutdown call made by hardliner separatist leader, Syed Ali Shah Geelani.
Violence once again rocked the Valley when some protestors took out a demonstration in Srinagar against human rights violations.
Geelani, Chairman of separatist group, Hurriyat Conference (G), had called for a statewide shutdown alleging the inhumane treatment of detainees languishing in various jails of India.
Things went out of control and police had to resort to baton charge and tear gas after protestors started pelting stones.
Separatist leaders claimed that human rights violation is still rampant in the valley and the authorities are doing little to improve the situation.
Schools, offices and business establishments remained closed in Kashmir observing the shutdown.
