| City wakes up to chilly morning, woolens back in business | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | Apr 5 When city residents woke this morning, there was an unusual welcome. The exceptionally chilly dawn reminded all of the weather which has long been bade adieu. Almost entire Jammu and Kashmir is witnessing an unusual weather and it was more significant this morning with not only the night long of rainfall but also a huge dip in the temperature. The woolen which had been consigned to the winter stock for the next season had to be taken out –it was an unprecedented day in the town. The tourists coming here in connection with Navratras had a real feeling of the proverbial Kashmir weather as they had to fall back on the warmer clothes. While it continued to rain in the town for the day, reports said that it heavily rained across the state. Overnight rains and fresh spell of snowfall in higher reaches across the Jammu region has already brought down rising level of mercury in the region forcing local residents to dig their cupboards to pick stocked woolens. Meanwhile, Katra town which is getting readied for t he nine day long Navratra festival wore a deserted look. The Katra town awaiting heavy rush of pilgrims on Navratra eve recorded little less attendance of pilgrims compared to previous years. Pilgrims were issued warnings to avoid taking short cuts due to slippery conditions and fear of land sliding. Thick blanket of fog engulfed Vaishno devi bhawan shrine followed by fresh spell of rain early Saturday morning. Meanwhile, situation on the 300 Km long Jammu Srinagar National Highway remained grim. Vehicular movement was disrupted for long hours as shooting stones and landslides near Panthial and Ramban halted smooth movement of traffic. Traffic police authorities on the National Highway said that landslides near Panthial blocked movement of the traffic on the highway through out the day.Hundreds of passengers and commercial vehicles were stranded at various places along the highway. Few passenger vehicles however managed to cross the dangerous mark despite continuous landslide in the area. |
