| Azad away, Soz makes hey | | PCC chief reviews women confab arrangements | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | Apr 5 With Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad being in New Delhi and the state Congress chief Saif-ud-Don Soz reviewing the arrangements for women’s conference in the winter capital, the signals coming out from Congress do not suggest a joint front in the party. Azad had rushed out for Delhi Friday afternoon while Soz along with the party’s women wing’s top leaders from Delhi reached here to review the arrangement for convention to be addressed by Sonia Gandhi on April 12. There are already conflicting claims in the sections of Congress on the basic idea of convening the women’s convention. The PCC chief and Union Water Resources Minister was the first to claim that he has invited Congress president Sonia Gandhi to address the convention which was conceived by him. However, another section says that Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad had spoken to Sonia Gandhi during her Srinagar visit on April 1 and it was decided there that the convention will be held in Jammu. Soz’s coming to Jammu to review the arrangements and organize a meeting of women wing functionaries at a time when Azad is away suggests that in Congress there is politics of competition against each other. Today’s meeting was significantly marked with absence of Ministers and other senior Congress leaders seen close to Azad. Addressing the women wing meeting here today, Soz said that congress party under dynamic leadership of Smt. Sonia Gandhi is committed to encourage and give due representation to the women to bring them to the forefront in the polity and other spheres of life. Only congress I is capable of doing so which has its presence in all six lakh villages in the country. He said that entire rank and file of the party stand behind mahila wing of the party to ensure greater participation of the women activities and workers in the scheduled convention. He also laid stress on strengthening of self-help groups of women in the state and taking maximum benefits from centre government schemes.
