| Livelihood security a must for bio resource conservation: VC BGSBU | | | Early Times Reporter Rajouri | Apr 7 Livelihood security is a must for ensuring bio resource conservation said Masud A. Choudhary the founder Vice Chancellor BGSBU in his presidential address during an impressive valedictory function of the second batch of three months training course in Mushroom Cultivation held at the Centre for Biodiversity Studies of the BGSBU. Several local citizens, representatives of the administration, officers including Registrar, Heads of various Departments and other officers of the University attended the function. Centre for Biodiversity Studies 'CBS' is dedicated to biodiversity conservation through research, education and people participation. BGSBU has the distinction of being the only institution in J&K to have established such a Centre. CBS in such a short span of time has been able to get national level recognition due to its several ongoing research, extension education and conservation initiatives. The training programme formed part of a Department of Biotechnology, Union Ministry of Science and Technology, sponsored three year project aiming to empower the rural women by training them in low-cost technologies depending on locally available raw materials. The aim of the bio resource based project is to improve financial status of rural women by training them in non-traditional activities such as mushroom cultivation, quail farming, cultivation of medicinal and aromatic plants, floriculture etc. The project helps the trainees in developing these traits as an enterprise along with familiarization with the concept of marketing and cooperatives, besides teaching them the techniques and benefits of mushroom cultivation through classroom lectures and first-hand practical training. Dr. Ashfaq Ahmed Zarri Scientist and Principal Investigator of this Project made a detailed presentation about the project and the achievements of Mushroom training batch. The event also marked the release of Trainees manuals of mushroom cultivation and medicinal and aromatic plant cultivation in Urdu language by the Vice Chancellor. The manuals were compiled by the project team. Meanwhile Chief Guest also distributed the cheques of Rs. 2400 and certificates to each trainee. Appreciating the role of Centre for socio economic development of the downtrodden sections of the society of this hinterland of J&K, the VC expressed hope for a major socio-economic change of the targeted villages towards the culmination of the project. He expressed confidence that the trainees would make use of such skills for setting up of their enterprises. |
