| Jammu University deserves Central University status: BJP | | | Early Times Reporter

The State BJP today strongly urged Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh and Human Resources Development Minister Arjun Singh to confer the status of Central University on the University of Jammu.
In a statement issued here today, State BJP Vice-President and spokesman Prof Hari Om said the University of Jammu, which has over the past few years excelled in all fields and ably marched towards academic excellence, will be accorded the Central University status. The University of Jammu, he asserted, is the best in the State by any standard and has been recognized as such not only nationally, but also globally.
Justifying the BJP demand, Prof Hari Om said the University of Jammu, where extracurricular activities, including sports, and talented students are encouraged, has been able to exhibit its academic excellence through a committed and talented faculty known not only in India but also outside. This can be seen from the frequent interaction between the teachers of Jammu University and teachers of Universities in Mauritius, Singapore, Pakistan, United States, Sweden, United Kingdom and Canada, to mention only a few, he pointed out. In this connection, he also said that teachers of Jammu University are collaborating with several institutions of international standard in and outside India, working on projects of universal import and making splendid contribution to every discipline.
Prof Hari Om further said that Jammu University has not only become an outstanding venue of national and international seminars and workshops, but has also become a place where matters of social and economic import and issues confronting, Jammu province and Ladakh region, the Indian nation as a whole and Pakistan are frequently discussed by distinguished opinion leaders, policy-planners, foreign policy experts and military strategists. Jammu University has become a venue where whole lot of issues are examined and thoroughly discussed, and not in camera. University of Jammu, which now stands virtually connected globally through internet and which has the distinction of having world class infrastructure and world class latest technology, is indeed the first University which has actually performed the role a university is actually supposed to perform.
He said it is the hope of the BJP in general and the people of Jammu province in particular that the Prime Minister would adopt a holistic approach while granting Central University status to one of the existing universities in Jammu and Kashmir. To ignore the legitimate claim of the University of Jammu, Prof Hari Om opined, would send a signal that there are persons in the PMO and Shastri Bhawan who take decisions not on merit, but on other considerations. |
