Pay commission recommendations drawing flak
4/10/2008 10:43:51 PM
The original euphoria over the recommendation of 6th pay commission has soon started waning. Every other day we hear the same drawing flaks from various sections of the Central government employees. The defense services are particularly sore over the commission placing them in the category below that of the senior IS officers. The high ranking officers in the defense forces in the rank of generals are particularly sore over their rating being put below the super scale secretaries in the various civil ministries. The defense services which are already short of man force with the army officers leaving their jobs and joining the corporate sector at much higher salaries, is further feared of large scale exodus. The news of 109 army officers putting up their papers, in the wake of being dissatisfied over the recommendations of the pay commission and with a view to joining the corporate sector creates an alarming situation. Even the IPS officers are not happy with the recommendations of the pay commission, as they allege that they have been given raw deal as compared to the IAS officers of equivalent ranks. The clamour among the employees in various states for application and implementation of the recommendations of the pay commission in their cases as well is highly justified and cannot be ignored. With the spiraling prices of essential commodities, the proposed increase in the pay scales of government employees will only upset the apple carts of financial management in the country. While voices of resentment in various services over disparity in the recommended pay scales are getting louder and louder, the inflationary fallout of enhanced salaries of Central government employees needs be taken serious notice of. The government which has already announced loan wavier to the small and marginal farmers to the tune of 6000 crores will be burdened with additional 2,000 crores on account of giving higher salaries to the employees in keeping with the recommendations of the pay commission. The corporate sector is particularly worried over the prospects of the additional burden to be put on them to meet the short fall or likely deficit in the union budget. Imposing of any new taxes on the industry and small entrepreneurs will create further unrest. What is worrying the common man more is the sky rocketing prices of all the essential commodities, mainly food stuffs and other items and services of daily use by the common household. The steps taken by the government so far to check the inflation, which has already beaten all previous records, touching 7%, are inadequate. More stringent measures and their proper implementation is imperative to bring down fall in the prices, to provide relief to the common man. Otherwise the steps taken by the government to appease only some sections of the population like farmers and government employees, will prove counter productive and are feared to lead to mutual ill will and even spark conflict and riots. Pursuing a sound economic policy, which can bring long term gains to stabilize the economy in the country, detached from eye on electoral games, is highly essential.
