Geelani camp forces moderates to defer election in Srinagar
7/6/2006 9:52:22 PM
Srinagar,July 6:- The hardliners in the separatist camp, led by Syed Ali Shah Geelani, demonstrated their strength when they forced Jamait-e-Islami to defer its organisational election for Srinagar district.

According to eyewitness accounts, when senior Jamait-e-Islami leaders reached the party unit in Soura on Wednesday for conducting the election of representatives for Srinagar district, supporters of Mr Geelani trooped into the area and shouted slogans against Jamaat leaders.

Amid growing tension the Jamaat leadership decided in favour of postponing the election.

Wednesday's development was a fallout of the growing rift between the moderates and the hardliners in Jamait-e-Islami.The moderates.headed by the party Amir,Mr Nazir Ahmed Kashani, had directed Mr Geelani and three other associates to quit Tehrik Hurriyat Conference if they wanted to retain the membership of Jamait-e-Islami and take part in the elections. The Geelani camp preferred to lead Tehrik Hurriyat Conference to Jamait-e-Islami.

Mr Geelani and thee of his associates, including Mr Ashraf Sehrai, have already been suspended from the Jamaat. When the Geelani camp realised that the moderates were trying to prevent the hardliners from taking part in the organisational election Mr Geelani directed his supporters in Tehrik and Jamaat to boycott the poll.

Political observers in the state are of the opinion that in case the Geelani camp tried to sabotage the poll process in other districts it would force the moderates to lose their face.In this context the next strategy of the moderates will be watched with interest
