| 1st JAKLI to celebrate its Raising Day on Apr 15 | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | Apr 13 Ist Battalion of Jammu and Kashmir Light Infantry, one of the oldest battalion of the Indian Army, is celebrating its Diamond Jubilee on April 15. It was the first battalion of Army to be raised during post independence. The battalion has deep roots in the State of J&K and was once part of the J&K State Forces. Rising on April 15, 1948 during the turbulent days of cross border raids into J&K, as a voluntary force then called as the First Jammu and Kashmir Militia Force. The Militia Force drew strength from late Sheikh Mohd Abdullah who galvanized efforts of Sons of the Soil from all castes and religions of our State. To celebrate its Diamond Jubilee, the battalion organized a Solemn Ceremony to honour its gallant martyrs especially late Rifleman Mohd Iqbal, Vir Chakra and late Rifleman Janak Singh, Vir Chakra, who hailed from Rajouri and Reasi respectively. A large number of senior officers of the Battalion addressed the old veterans at a large gathering during the Special Sainik Sammelan organized today where war widows of the martyrs’ were also honoured. |
