| KV comes to Tangdhar village | | | Early Times Reporter Jammu | Apr 15 Enduring the vagaries of rough weather, the remote village of Tanghdar in Kashmir is all set to have a Kendriya Vidyalaya (KV), raising hope for hundreds of children, who currently find their education restricted to primary levels. As of now, the area has no school offering education beyond primary level. There are only some schools that run classes till eight only and students need to travel at least 50 kilometers to continue further studies. Besides, the weather conditions are often tough in Tangdhar and adjoining areas. However, thanks to the intervention by a social organisation ANHAD (Act Now for Harmony and Democracy), the KV would be set up there by the end of this year. "When snow falls, temperatures can plummet to minus ten degrees Celsius and this prevents students from pursuing their studies," said Tanveer Hussain who is working with ANHAD in the area, explaining the problems faced by the students. Hussain, who was in Delhi recently, said that despite the hardships faced by the villagers, they insisted that a school that offers quality education was their need. The quality education was necessary to improve the social condition in the area, villagers felt. "Most of the villagers refuse to send their wards far away to study. Some of them take help from relatives staying in Srinagar. They keep the children with the relatives in order to continue them to school," Hussain said. The area has also not recovered from 2005 earthquake in Jammu and Kashmir. The earthquake had killed an estimated 300 people in the region and left barely a home standing. "Families still fight for the basic requirements because most of them had lost everything is the quake. They are yet to come out of the trauma and loss they suffered during the incident," Shabnam Hashmi, a member of ANHAD, said. "With a sanction of this Kendriya Vidyalaya, the villagers are very hopeful that they would be able to be a part of the mainstream," Hashmi added. A delegation of ANHAD had met HRD Minister Arjun Singh in this regard about ten days ago. The school is expected to come up by the end of this year. |
